ABSTRACT: The article focuses on family governance applied to agricultural enterprises in the context of succession planning. The research problem addressed is the fragility of family business continuity in the absence of governance practices capable of balancing interests and reducing conflicts among heirs. The hypothesis is that governance, structured through family protocols, councils, and decision-making bodies, is decisive in ensuring the longevity of organizations. The general objective is to demonstrate the importance of governance for maintaining business activities and family harmony during the succession process. The specific objectives include: understanding the relationship between family, ownership, and management; analyzing governance models applicable to family-owned agricultural enterprises; and highlighting the role of management professionalization in the succession process. The research method adopted was based on a literature review and the analysis of experiences reported in specialized studies, enabling an understanding of how governance is applied in family farming enterprises. The findings indicate that most family businesses do not surpass the third generation due to the absence of clear governance rules and the accumulation of conflicts. It was observed that the adoption of decision-making forums, such as family councils and protocols, helps to separate the roles of family, ownership, and management, thereby reducing tensions and strengthening business sustainability. The study concludes that governance, when well-structured, is an essential factor for the continuity of family farming enterprises across generations.
